Anthony turned six months old on December 30th, 2011 and had his six month appointment a few days later. He weighed in at 17 lbs., 9 oz and was 26 3/4 inches long. Those were the 50th percentile for weight and 75th for height, which was the same as where he was at his four month appointment. Here are some updates and highlights from between five and six months:
- The big news is Anthony can sit up on his own now! He had pretty much been doing it, but we were still supporting him with pillows. The week between Christmas and New Year's though he could completely sit on his own without losing his balance. He loves being able to sit and play now and feels like such a big boy! Collin and Meagan gave him his little chair for Christmas, and he absolutely loves it! It was perfect for him now that he's able to sit up so well, and he feels like such a big boy in it too.
- Anthony first rolled over from his back to his stomach right before he turned five months and a couple of weeks later, he rolled from his stomach over to his back. He's been funny about it...even though he knows how to now, he really doesn't do it often. Once he gets on his stomach, he'd rather stay there and play and do some push-ups.
- We started giving Anthony some vegetables in addition to his cereal at five and a half months. He did so well with them and absolutely loves to eat! He was a fan of the green beans and sweet potatoes, but the sweet peas, not so much. We tried them again a couple of times after initially giving them to him, and he'll eat them if he's really hungry, but you can tell he doesn't care for them as much.
- Anthony took the singing to a whole new level between five and six months. He got to where he was singing all the time and at the top of his lungs! You could always count on him to do it the second the car started moving anytime we went anywhere, as well as anytime he got in his swing and it started swinging. He also started singing in his stroller and if we had him in his car seat while we were out shopping. There were many times I had to sing along with him in Wal-mart or the grocery store when he looked up at me and wanted me to sing too. It has been so funny watching people while we're out and about when they'd pass by him. He was so loud people could hear him from a distance, and you could tell at first they thought he was crying. When they got closer though, he had a pleasant look on his face and was just singing, and they'd either smile at him or me when they realized he was happy.
- Anthony has learned how to throw things now, and I'm afraid it's turned into a terrible habit, which may have been partly our fault. He first started out doing it with the little elephant he plays with on his changing table. He got to where he would play so rough with it and wave it all around and then he figured out how to let go and throw him. Well, David and I were so proud of him and cheered and made a big deal out of it, so of course, Anthony kept on doing it over and over. So, just about every time he gets his diaper changed, he wants to play with Mr. Elephant and throw him.
- Anthony cannot stand to feel different textures and will just shiver all over when he does. One example was before Christmas when he was out at Mom's school, she let him feel one of the Santa's hanging outside a classroom that had a beard made out of cottonballs. It wasn't a big deal when he touched it, but a few seconds after he pulled his hand away, he shivered all over. He also does the same thing if you try and wipe his mouth off with a napkin or paper towel so we're trying to stick with the cloth bibs to keep his mouth clean.
- He still loves books, and at six months, his favorites were the ones that had flaps in them. His absolute favorite is one of the Spot books called Where's Spot? Another one he loves is called Peek-a-boo and has farm animals that play peek-a-boo when you open the flaps hiding their faces. Anthony's also very particular about which books he likes and doesn't like. If you pick up one and start to read it, and he doesn't like it, he will grunt and fuss. So, I'll pick up another one, and he'll keep doing the same thing until I start to read the book he wants me to read. Not only does he have his favorite books, he also has his favorite pages in those books, and he'll grunt and fuss trying to get you to turn the page to the next one if he doesn't like the one you're on.
- Anthony still raises his head up and does his crunches and just tries so hard to sit up that way. At six months, he got to where he could do it on his Boppy pillow or if he was lying on the floor and you held his feet for him. This boy must have abs of steel!
- Anthony has been trying so hard to talk, and a lot of times he just opens his mouth and nothing comes out, but he's working it trying to figure out how to say something. We've been working with him on some words, especially Mama and Da-da, but we also tried to get him to say hi. He understands what it means and will try to say it, but it comes out more with just the tone and nothing like the actual word. It's still so cute though and is his way of saying hi.
- He has always loved his swing, but recently has fallen in love with it even more and especially with the birds above his head. He loves to get in it and will just laugh and squeal and talk to them. Being in his swing is one of the times when he's the happiest, and I love watching him when he's in it.
- It may have been because of Christmas, but Anthony's favorite color is red. We started noticing it when people started wearing red sweaters and clothes through Christmas. He was just fascinated with them and that happened all through Christmas with anything red. Since Christmas though, he's continued to be that way with any and all things that are red. He loves it!
- Anthony also has developed a fascination with cups. He is always grabbing for our drinks and we've given him some empty plastic cups to play with, and honestly, those are one of his favorite things to play with, as well as empty water bottles. We went ahead and bought him a couple of sippy cups to play and practice with so I'm sure when the time comes, he'll love drinking out of them.
- When playing with Anthony and trying to get him to mimic our actions, one of the things we did was try and get him to open his mouth and say "ah". He learned how to do it, and it actually came in handy when we were at the doctor's office for his six month check-up. The doctor went to look in his mouth, but Anthony refused to open up and was more interested in looking at the light on the instrument the doctor was trying to use. So, I went ahead and tried to get him to open his mouth for me, and sure enough, he did it and the doctor was able to look inside his mouth. So funny!
- Anthony loves playing pat-a-cake and peek-a-boo. When you grab his hands to do pat-a-cake, his face just lights up, and he giggles like crazy. Same thing with peek-a-boo. He loves it and will squeal like crazy when you play it.
- One of his favorite toys he got for Christmas is a little Mickey Mouse that sings. Every time you hold Mickey up to him and have him start singing Anthony gets the biggest grin on his face and will reach out to grab him and hug him. It's the cutest thing, and he'll smile at him every time. As much as Anthony loves to sing himself, I guess it only makes sense that he loves to hear Mickey singing.
- Anthony likes to have his pacifier when he's sleepy, but he's gotten to where he will pull it out when he's tired. A lot of times he'll hold it out and look at it in his hand, but he's been trying to put it back in, but just can't quite figure out how to get it turned right yet. Also, instead of getting cranky when he's tired, Anthony has a tendency to get silly and giddy. Some of the funniest things have happened when he's exhausted, and we've laughed at him so hard only because he's also laughing so hard at pretty much nothing or us doing something funny to make him laugh.
- Anthony has learned how to do the fake cough, and this is another one of the things he figured out how to do as a mimic. You can ask him if he has a bad cough, and he'll do it a couple of times, but sometimes he'll be all drawn out and exaggerated with it.
- We also worked with him on trying to blow raspberries. He only was able to do it a handful of times, but most times he'll put his lips together and make a really loud "puh" sound. Sometimes he'll just make a shrill noise with his lips together too, so even though he isn't really blowing raspberries, he's acting like he is just by making the sound.
- Anthony tends to get fussy when you put him in his carseat, and as soon as he's buckled in, he is ready to go at that second. One day we had him buckled in, but had to wait to take him out to the car, so we tapped his car seat and kinda bumped it against the ground with him in it. For some reason, he thinks that is the funniest thing ever, and no matter how upset he is that you've strapped him in his seat, if you start bumping him a little, he will immediately quit fussing and start laughing. Along the same lines, he has learned what "Bye-bye" means and if you ask him if he wants to go bye-bye, he will get all excited. This boy loves to be on the go and riding in a car!
- Anthony loves to play rough with you, but is also really loving. Sometimes he'll love on you by playing rough. He's learned to rub heads with you, and if you get close to him, he'll lean in to put his head against yours and will sometimes try to grab your face with his hands when he does it. He also loves to grab your arm and pull you close and try and wrestle with it. He does this all the time when getting his diaper changed. You'll start to change him and as soon as your arm gets close enough, he'll reach out and grab it. We refer to it as "arm wrestling".
That pretty much sums up Anthony at six months and is all the updates. Here are his pictures from then:
